Nicosia lies roughly in the centre of the Island, within easy reach of other towns. It is the only remaining divided capital city in the world.
The historical fortress capital city
The city is surrounded by a huge 16th century fortress and contains museums, ancient churches, medieval buildings and monuments of historical interest as well as shops, cafes and tavernas. "Must-sees" include:
Important sites include the 16th century Paphos Castle, the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion - with their amazing third-century mosaic floors – and the Odeon, a small, second-century Roman theatre.

Age to the roman Period
- Famagusta Gate (Pyli Ammochostou) - One of the original
entrances to the old city which was restored and won the Europa
nostra award. Many old churches are found in this part of town
